Today's featured Etsy artist is ILaBoom, from Greece. She specializes in hand-made shadow boxes frames, light boxes, pedestals and vintage inspired paper goods. Here is an item from her shop that caught my eye:

"Le petit bonheur" means "small happiness". I love this sentiment. It's so important for all of us to find happiness in the small things.

Yoga in Deep Ellum

I recently took a field trip to a unique part of Dallas with lots of history: Deep Ellum. My reason for the trip from the suburbs into the big downtown was to visit with Jessica Jordan, owner of Super Yoga Palace. I brought some pieces from Moondog Treasures' yoga jewelry collection to show her.

Jessica is a person with a vision similar to mine: to create a community of yogis in her neighborhood and to provide a space for them to practice yoga that doesn't break the bank. I like Jessica. Here are a few photos I took around the street near her studio. I peeked inside, but didn't take pics because a class was in progress. Trust me, it's warm and inviting inside.

Caring for the environment is also important to Jessica. From her web-site: "Super Yoga Palace is kind to the Earth and encourages those who practice here to be so as well. Green products and recycled materials were used to create the studio space, plants throughout filter the air, and recycled, sanitized yoga mats are available if you are in need."

I'm happy to say that she'll be offering some of the eco-friendly pieces (recycled Indian coins and sari fabric, recycled precious silver) from my yoga collection on her site and in her studio.

Building a photography light box

New year...new adventures. Yesterday I decided it was time to get more professional with the photos for my etsy shop. I found inspiration from this site, WikiHow.

So, here it is in all its glory...

Finished project. Ready for the camera.

A display board for science projects.
I bought this because it is already lined white on the inside.

I scavenged the house for products that matched the list online, then I headed to Lowe's for the rest.

I cut the board to make it into a box, then cut
one inch borders around 3 sides and the top lid
for the parchment paper. See finished product below.

Lamps with clips, from Lowe's. Thanks to hubby
for help in finding these. Bright halogen bulbs.

Voila! The finished product. The openings in the sides and top are taped with
parchment paper. More white to brighten up the photos. The lamps are attached to
the sides and top for white light all around. I'm still using the maps as background.

Here's how the first photo turned out. I'm liking it, but it still needs some work.
I'm going to play around with the angles of the lights...

Merry Christmas from Moondog Treasures

Our family has a Charlie Brown tree. It's a scrawny little Christmas tree, but we love it. We treasure this tree because it's the one where we hang all of our hand-made, sticky-finger-kid-made ornaments from throughout the years and from the current year.

We have a regular Christmas tree too, with all the expensive ornaments and trim, but our favorite will always be the Charlie Brown one. I hope that when my kids are grown that I will continue this tradition and keep creating hand-made ornaments each year.

A Tip for Recycling PMC Silver Clay

PMC (Precious Metal Clay), or silver clay, is a recycled product. See my posts here and here for details about how it originated. It is so much fun to play with (I mean work with) this product. You can imprint just about anything into the clay, put it in a kiln, and it comes out looking like this...

One of my favorite things about PMC is that you can actually recycle and reuse your "mistakes" (pieces that were chipped or just didn't turn out right). I had been saving those "mistakes" for just such an occasion. I read countless tips about how to reconstitute unused dried clay - adding distilled water to the clay, wrapping it in cling wrap and waiting for it to magically turn into the expensive clay that I had bought. It didn't work as I had planned. I found it difficult to get the right consistency. Using a little rolling pin (pvc pipe) to press out the lumps helped, but the clay was too sticky to work. It kept clinging to my hands, until...

I discovered a new tool - the toothpick! I kept working the clay, poking it with the toothpick, exposing it to air to dry it out, then spraying with water for more moisture. Voila! I came pretty close to re-creating the original product. Here are a couple of photos of my new discovery and how it worked for me:

I especially loved how once the clay was in ball form, I was able to use the toothpick like a handle and pick up all the loose bits of dried clay that sticks to the cling wrap.

Hope this tip helps those out there who are frustrated with the challenging process of reconstituting pmc.

This OM necklace was a great seller from Moondog Treasures at the most recent trunk show I've done. It was a favorite among the students at a yoga event that involved 108 Sun Salutations in celebration of the beginning of fall. The necklace features a wire-wrapped glazed ceramic bead with the om symbol. Om is the peaceful vibration of all creation.

This week I'm featuring Etsy Artist, minimalista. She's from one of my favorite places, California. She includes images of the Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo, in many of her items. I own a Frida t-shirt from minimalista. I love the individualism that shows up in Frida's artwork, her love of nature, and her portrayal of suffering. Here is an example of one of the Frida scarves from this etsy seller:

Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

I've admired this artist for quite some time, choosing this particular item to showcase because it has a personal significance for me. My sister, her daughter, my daughter and I got to visit the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal when we were in Paris last summer. The site was so unassuming, nestled in among the other buildings along a Paris sidestreet.

Inside was a beautiful chapel where we happened upon the beginning of mass (in French, of course). There was school of children visiting. We listened to their angels' voices singing every song during the mass. By far, this was absolutely my favorite part of Paris.

Finishing the Precious Silver PMC Pendants

The previous blog entry showed precious silver in its clay form, after it had been shaped and stamped. These next few photos show the finishing process.

All about Precious Silver with Moondog Treasures

PMC is Precious Metal Clay. This material was created by the Mitsubishi Corporation in the early 1990s as a way to recover silver, gold, and platinum from old computers, medical instruments and photography supplies. A method was developed that allowed the combination of precious metals into a type of clay that could be used to make jewelry and other products.

The PMC comes to me in clay form. It contains of particles of pure silver mixed with an organic binder. I take images and letters and press them into the clay (see photos below), then fire in my kiln at 1200 degrees. When the binder is burned away during firing, it leaves a pendant of 99.9% pure silver.

It's nice to know that PMC is made with sustainable/recycled materials. I am even able to use the leftover clay and “mistakes” again by re-constituting the clay and creating a new product.

I'm adding a few new designs to my PMC pendant collection: Mahatma Gandhi's quote, "Be the Change"/"harmony" with lotus flower/tiny om pendants/"moksha" (sanskrit word for freedom) with om symbol/"ananda" (sanskrit word for bliss) with lotus flower. Some other best-sellers I'm including are the "namaste" ring pendant, Ganesh pendant and om symbol pendants.

All of these will be for sale soon (after they're fired in the kiln and polished) in my online shop, Moondog Treasures.

Moondog at Yoga Event at Lifetime Fitness

Moondog Treasures was invited to be a part of a yoga event at Lifetime Fitness last weekend. It was a special gathering of people for 108 Sun Salutations to celebrate the Fall Equinox. The Soldering Iron is Hot!

Here are a few photos of what I've been up to on a rainy Saturday. The soldering iron heats up to 465 degrees F. I take images and secure them between two hand-cut pieces of glass. Then they are soldered together with lead free silver solder and a super hot iron!! The pendants go on faux leather black or brown cord to become a necklace. I also create Christmas ornaments with favorite photos that I solder together. They'll be featured soon in my shop.

i've pressed a stamp with the om symbol into the clay, then fired with a torch. after that, the pendant was tumbled to buff it to a high polish.

World-Wide Global Mala Event

It got here today!! My arduous yoga journey has come to an end...for now. I'm officially a 500-hour RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) Shiva Rea Prana Vinyasa Teacher. Bhumi Devi Mala Bracelet:

mala bracelet made of burnt red jasper beads. bhumi devi is the sanskrit name for the hindu earth goddess, one of the two wives of vishnu.

a japa mala, or mala, is a set of prayer beads popular in India and Tibet, commonly made from 108 beads. it is used to keep count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra.it is traditional of Tibetan Buddhism to recite mantras 108 times.

many malas have 108 beads, or are also made smaller but are divided into 108 to come up with 27 and 54 bead malas. each time you end a round, you reach the stop bead on top. that helps you keep track of how many times you have gone around.

this mala bracelet has 27 dark red jasper beads and one larger shining red glass bead. the beads are strung on clear strong elastic cord which is double-knotted at the end.

this turquoise and black wire-wrapped beaded cross brings thoughts of a sunny day at sea.

the shimmering features chinese crystal, turquoise chip, and glass and silver beads. all of these are wire-wrapped around a large silver cross charm. wrapped into the center of the cross is a large turquoise and black leopard-spotted glass rectangular bead. the cross dangles on a black faux leather cord with lobster clasp closure. a very elegant look.

I have loved glass for many years. From my initial work in cold glass and small glass jewelry to collecting beach glass while walking on the shore, glass has long fascinated me. I especially enjoy watching the beautiful transformation of glass once heat is applied to it. I began working on kiln formed glass at home in 2006 in my first small kiln. In this kiln, I make tiny “dots” and small pattern bars, which I use as the centerpiece of embellishment on solid transparent glass. All pieces featured here at Buddha Kitty Glass are made in my home studio in Seattle.

A word from the artist:

If my life were perfect, I would have been born two hundred years ago. Instead, I find myself in the technology age using the traditional pen and ink techniques of dead people.

All of my prints are high-quality, printed on archival-safe cotton rag paper by the Cadillac of printers, an Epson large enough to take up an entire shelf of my boyfriend's bookcase.

Here we have three wooden blocks depicting a basil leaf, a fern, and a poppy flower, perfect for that little spot on the wall or empty space on the bookshelf. The designs have been screenprinted on a piece of tea-stained muslin and nailed to the blue-gray washed wood with upholstery nails.

My Last Trip to Cali...For Now

So, I went to LA in February for the last of my 500-hour yoga teacher training w/ Shiva Rea. It feels bittersweet. I'm so glad to have finished the training - a huge accomplishment, comparable to achieving a master's degree in Spanish Lit. Now I'm sad that I don't have a "real" excuse to keep going back to California every few months!

I rented a car this time. LA traffic really wasn't as bad as I had heard. It must have been a full moon or something :). It was fun traveling on my own, exploring the city, thanks to the GPS on loan to me by my hosts, Michael and Michiko.

Here are some pics from my oftentimes rainy drive: Ventura Blvd., the 405, Mulholland Drive, the PCH, Laurel Canyon Blvd., Malibu, Pepperdine University, and a dog wash called Moondoggies (I couldn't resist).

Michiko and I went to a private party at Nobu. That's Ron Howard in the background. He's the guy in the blue sweater. You'll just have to trust me on that.

I drove into Venice Beach from LA for the training most every morning at 5:45 a.m. to beat the morning traffic. Here is a pic of Santa Monica, taken from outside the health food shop where I had lunch most days. Also some pics of the Venice Boardwalk.

Just posted this today at moondogtreasures. Shanti Peace Soldered Pendant on Chain:

shanti is the sanskrit word for peace. this soldered glass pendant contains the word "shanti" on one side and its equivalent in sanskrit on the other in crisp black and white. a beautiful tribute to the concept of peace.the images are secured between two hand-cut pieces of glass that are then soldered together with lead free silver solder. the pendant is securely sealed but it is not waterproof. the pendant dangles on a silver ball link chain with adjustable lobster clasp closure.

BeachHouseBlues is this week's Etsy artist. One of my favorite books is Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. This photo of the Nautilus reminds me of one of the chapters in that book about how we are all multi-faceted beings shedding our various layers as the creature inside the nautilus does when it grows too big for its shell. I'm fortunate to be able to revisit the coast of California soon for more yoga teacher training. I'm looking forward to experiencing a connection with the ocean.

Mandala Magnets are here! I found a bunch of round magnets at SCRAP, a program here in Portland, Oregon that diverts tons of materials from being thrown into the landfill by reselling them to the public. Somehow or other they got ahold of these "I Support Green Power" magnets from Utah Power (which you can see in the last photo). I bought 'em up, because I love circles...Circle, of course is what the Sanskrit word "mandala" means, and mandalas are my middle name! So I printed stickers of my mandala designs and put them on the magnets to create cool new upcycled love!

California Part V: Shiva Rea

Oh yeah, my reason for traveling to CA - more yoga teacher training w/ Shiva Rea. This time it was for the pre and post-natal training.
I braved the LA traffic on the first morning to be able to take a class w/ this wonderful yogi, Erich Shiffman. When I asked for this photo, this is how he responded. What a teddy bear. Definitely worth the traffic!
Shiva organized a celebration of Navrati, complete w/ this Lantra mandala, which took all day to create and was destroyed that night after the celebration. It is symbolic of the creative and destructive nature of mankind and how the pain in our lives gives way to divine creation.

Some wonderful friends I met along the way. Post-celebration, sporting our bindis and peaceful smiles.

A Rasta guy w/ a very strong opinion about our government. Notice the trailer in the background. Lots of the vendors on the beach drive their trailers to the beach to sell things. Because parking isn't allowed on the beach at night, they drive up the block to park and sleep before doing it all again the next day.

California Part II: Venice Beach

Well, what can I say, it's Venice. Lots of unique people, artists, homeless, performers...
Harry Parry, the infamous turban-wearing, roller-blading, Jimi-Hendrix-inspired Venice mainstay. I see him every time I visit.

One of the many homeless, this elderly man slept outside of our window. People brought him food every day which he shared with the pigeons. There was one white pigeon that would sit on his lap and eat out of his hand.
I liked this guy's tattoo.

California Part I: Newport Beach

World-Wide Global Mala Event

On September 21-23, the Global Mala Project, whose purpose is to unite the global yoga community, will implement events throughout the world in honor of the United Nations International Day of Peace. I studied yoga with Shiva Rea, the coordinator of this event, in the summer of 2007 (photos at very bottom of this page). I'll continue my studies with her this October. This event is very close to my heart.

I love the perky little tie on this top and the sweet little puffed sleeves. It makes me think secretary, somehow. The soft sage and tan print are fun without shouting, but the sleeves and tie will get you noticed.

Cancun Waters Bracelet

So many years ago I went to Cancun with a college buddy. Way back when before all the high-rise hotels were built along the white sand shores. The color of these beads remind me of the color of the ocean there.

medium-sized turquoise rectangle beads surround a large silver-toned oval bead. interspersed are smaller turquoise beads and silver findings. piece is closed off with a toggle clasp and dangling heart charm.

If you love your cats as much as I do mine, you have found the best place on earth for catnip toys, mats and quilts! Each item is handmade with love and the help of six kitties. All but one of my "kids" were orphans. I raised one from a kitten, and the others I have acquired for one reason or another. I have had cats all my life.

Here is my latest listing on Etsy: Azure Seas Rosary Bracelet.

This bracelet features 10 chinese crystal beads interspaced with smaller glass beads and 1 large silver bead. The 10 crystal beads count off the "Hail Mary" and the larger bead is for the "Our Father". Attached to the bracelet are a silver "inspire" charm and a sterling silver cross. The bracelet closes with a lobster clasp and adjustable chain.

Inspired by a Charles Ashbee neckalce (1896-1903) and a William Morris tapistry (1877). The overall look is based on a traditional Wycinanki (Polish Papercutting) papercut. Wycinanki cuts are typically created by stacking layeres of color paper cutouts on a black papercut background. My first color piece! 18x18 unframedEach of my designs are original, one of a kind pieces,cut by hand from a single sheet of black paper and mounted to white mat board.

This cool medieval-looking journal is an excellent place to pen your creative thoughts and doodles! This hard cover, blank journal is hand-bound using Coptic stitch and embellished with a glass and polymer clay medallion. The inside covers are a marbled design, color coordinated to match the outside of the book.

From the time I could hold a crayon in my hand, I always wanted to be an artist when I grew up—and here I am! I am a mixed-media artist and have dabbled in everything from paper arts to jewelry design, collage and pottery. I am mostly self taught but have been fortunate enough to have taken a few classes from artists that I consider to be highly regarded in the lampwork world. My beads are made with soft glass such as Morette/Effetre, ASK, Lauscha and others. In Mexican iconography, a retablo carries special prayers and wishes to God. A familiar retablo painting (on wood or tin) would have someone who is ill lying in bed beseeching the Virgin Mary for intercession to regain their health. I love these wooden prayers... I love painting on wood... I love sending these prayers into the universe and hope that they land beside you...

This piece is from my Peaceful Neighborhood collection and begins with the foundation of most houses - sheetrock; then it is layered as most homes should be - peace, love, and hope.This retablo measures 6" x 12" and comes with a matching easel for display.
